Welcome to the summer term!
I hope you all had a lovely Easter and the children had a wonderful break.
Please have a look at what your child will be learning throughout the Summer term. . .
If you need anything or have any additional questions, please let me know via dojo or at the gate before/after school.
Specific areas of learning:
Read Write Inc
Children are taught to read and spell through daily phonics - Read Write Inc. They will learn and practice recognising and sounding letters using Fred talk to read and Fred Fingers to spell.
There is more information Read Write Inc under the 'RWI Phonics' on our class page on the website.
In Literacy we will practice writing words using these texts. We will use our phonic knowledge to help us to spell. We will ensure that are letters are correct formed. We will start to learn about sentences and start to use a capital letter, use finger spaces between words and finish our sentences with a full stop.
Mathematics
In the Summer term, the children will develop their number work of 5 and 10, and will be learning to count on from 10 up to 20. They will continue to use concrete resources such as ten frames to support their counting, addition and subtraction. The children will explore numerical patterns including halving and doubling. Children will explore what is meant by doubling and will learn to recognise and represent
doubles to double 5 in a range of contexts. Children will also focus on halving quantities by
sharing into two equal groups. They will make links to the fact that halving is the opposite, or inverse, of doubling.
Religious Education
In the unit of Easter, the children learn about the story of Easter and the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. They will be introduced to the “Alleluia” as a special Easter song and the symbol of the Easter Candle.
Our following units will be Pentecost and People who Help us.
Prime areas of learning:
Our curriculum driver for this half term is Our Environment. The children will learn ways that we can take care of our environment through immersive texts such as: Mia Makes a Meadow, The Extraordinary Gardener and Betsy Buglove and The Brave Butterfly. We will be planting and have some little visitors that we will watch turn into butterflies!
Communication and Language
Spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development. We continue to support the children in learning new vocabulary throughout the day and developing their spoken language through using My Turn Your Turn and stem sentences modelled by the adults, talking time, partner talk, lots of discussion and opportunities to ask questions. Children will learn new words and be encouraged to use them in conversation.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Children’s personal social and emotional development is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives. We continue to support them to learn and develop their personal social and emotional skills through developing strong and supportive relationships with the adults in the class and their peers. Through stories and activities, they will identify and name emotions, and are supported to reflect on and self-regulate their feelings and behaviour.
Physical Development
We encourage the children to get changed for PE themselves, they are currently on a 10 min target! This term we are focusing on performing a single skill or movement with some control. Performing a small range of skills and linking two movements together. They will explore moving confidently in different ways. They will become aware of why exercise is important for good health and be aware of the changes to the way they feel when they exercise. They are developing their ball skills as well.
Physical Development is also about the development of fine motor skills, including holding a pencil correctly in order to write. The children participate in lots of activities which develop their fine motor, including threading, lacing, picking up small objects with child tweezers, scissor skills.
Expressive Arts and Design
Our art focus will be to continue to use our colour mixing skills to develop our art work. We will provide opportunities for drawing and making using a variety of materials linked to our curriculum vehicle.
In Music, we will continue to use the Charanga Music Platform to learn to sing along with nursery rhymes and action songs, to listen and respond to different styles of music, to play musical instruments, and to demonstrate the learning that has taken place through sharing and performing.
We will enjoy using the story lines from our text to act out the story.
Understanding the World
We will continue to support the children to make sense of their physical world and their community through looking at mini beasts, flowers and animals. We will sort and compare different mini beasts and animals, draw information from a local map of our environment. Children will search and record the bugs they have found and explore them as the weather changes. They will learn about famous people e.g. Sir David Attenborough. They will explore our natural environment and improve it by growing ‘bee loving’ flowers and creating bug hotels. We will observe flowers, correctly label and grow own seedlings to encourage minibeasts.
