Spring term

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year!

Please have a look at what your child will be learning throughout the Spring term. . .

If you need anything or have any additional questions, please let me know via dojo or at the gate before/after school.

Specific areas of learning:

Read Write Inc

Children are taught to read and spell through daily phonics - Read Write Inc. They will learn and practice recognising and sounding letters using Fred talk to read and Fred Fingers to spell.
There is more information Read Write Inc under the 'RWI Phonics' on our class page on the website.

In Literacy we will practise writing words using these texts. We will use our phonic knowledge to help us to spell. We will ensure that are letters are correct formed. We will start to learn about sentences and start to use a capital letter, use finger spaces between words and finish our sentences with a full stop.

Mathematics

In the Spring 1 half term, the children will have chance to practice their understanding of 5, and begin to recognise, represent and manipulate numbers to 10. They will learn how to:

  • Count to 10, starting with a focus on groups of 6, 7, and 8, and then 9 and 10.
  • Recognise and count different representations of 10, using concrete resources to structure their counting and reasoning.
  • Compare numbers within 10 (more than and less than).
  • Add numbers within 10. They will bring together their key skills of one more and one less, and using the part-whole model in order to ensure confident mastery of the skill of combining two groups to find a whole up to 10.

Religious Education

Our next unit is Baptism. The children will learn about the church being an important gathering place for God's family. They will be introduced to some of the important symbols and actions of the Baptismal Rite. Next, the children will learn about Prayer, some of the reasons Christians pray and some styles of prayer. They will begin to talk to God in their own words, and reflect on some of their experiences of prayer through the school year.

Prime areas of learning:

Our curriculum driver for this half term is Fairytales. We will be looking at characters, setting and creating our own twists to retell the story! Overarching texts include: Room on the Broom, The Magic Porridge Pot, and Hansel and Gretel. These tales will shape our Rainbow Challenge, where children will learn through structured play activities shaped by and based on Development Matters.

Communication and Language

Spoken language underpins all seven areas of learning and development. We continue to support the children in learning new vocabulary throughout the day and developing their spoken language through using My Turn Your Turn and stem sentences modelled by the adults, talking time, partner talk, lots of discussion and opportunities to ask questions. Children will learn new words and be encouraged to use them in conversation.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children's personal social and emotional development is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives. We continue to support them to learn and develop their personal social and emotional skills through developing strong and supportive relationships with the adults in the class and their peers. Through stories and activities, they will identify and name emotions, and are supported to reflect on and self-regulate their feelings and behaviour.

Physical Development

We encourage the children to get changed for PE themselves, they are currently on a 15 minute target!! This half term we are focusing on following instructions and balancing. Physical Development is also about the development of fine motor skills, including holding a pencil correctly in order to write. The children participate in lots of activities which develop their fine motor, including threading, lacing, picking up small objects with child tweezers, scissor skills. During outdoor activities, they develop gross and fine motor skills with bikes, climbing, sand and water experiences.
